Introducing Seasons: Few musical groups are named at the birth of their members. But
little did Brenda and Randy Lee know that when they gave their
children seasons of the year as middle names (Mary-Kate Spring,
Peter Winter, Mary-Teresa Summer, Mary-Grace Autumn) they were also
providing them with a perfect name for a band. When they adopted
Mary-Clare from China and learned her Chinese name “Chun” was the
Chinese word for “Spring” they knew it was meant to be.
While all the Lee kids took piano as
their first instrument, they realized early on that playing gigs as
a six-piano band would prove
problematic logistically. Instead,
they found other large and cumbersome instruments to drive around in
their twelve-passenger van. Mary-Kate Spring picked up the harp
after mom had the last “season,” Luke Joseph Winter, and couldn’t
keep taking lessons herself. After Peter Winter decided the harp was
not for him (after approximately one lesson from his sister) he
requested a guitar. Instead, his parents bought him a hammered
dulcimer due to his dad’s longtime love of Rich Mullins.
Mary-Kate Spring and Peter Winter
started playing as a duo at nursing homes and churches, and were
soon joined by Mary-Teresa Summer, who, unlike Peter, was amenable
to Mary-Kate teaching her the harp. Mary-Grace, skilled both at the
Celtic harp and hammered dulcimer joined the band while Peter was
studying abroad in Austria, giving the band its “dueling dulcimers.”
Mary-Clare Chun studies classical violin and is venturing into
fiddle tunes, and Luke Joseph plays the cello.
As the band developed, Mary-Teresa
picked up the mandolin and various forms of percussion, Peter added
guitar and bohdran (Irish drum) to his list of instruments he can
handle, and Mary-Kate learned hammered dulcimer and organ (which
again has proved difficult for the roadies). Several of the Lees
also play penny whistle after it was determined that the van didn’t
have enough room for any more large instruments. Seasons has
performed in multiple states and countries, including Pennsylvania,
Alabama, Ohio, Austria, Italy, and Canada. They “accidentally” got
to open for Grammy award-winner Ashley Cleveland at Gospelfest, and
have also opened for Scythian and closed for Celtic Fiddle Festival.
From the Hilton to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire to the JP II
Cultural Center to the Harrisburg Tractor Show, Seasons’ sound has
fit in perfectly with a variety of settings. Their style fits a
formal reception, an intimate coffeehouse or winery, or an outdoor
festival. Seasons also performs in hospitals, nursing homes, and
teaches private lessons. Their set lists are as eclectic as their
different musical tastes, featuring Celtic, early American tunes,
original songs, and covers that you would never expect to hear on
harp and hammered dulcimer (Coldplay, anyone…) all arranged by the
band and infused with an infectious energy that has audiences
clapping along.
Seasons has appeared on multiple
television shows and radio stations, including “Life on the Rock,”
and “Dana and Friends.” Both their albums “Eventide Lullabye” and
“Which Way to Dublin Town” feature original songs and innovative
arrangements of Christmas and Celtic music. Mary-Kate Spring has
released a “mostly” harp CD, entitled “Mirabilis,” which features
guest performances by her siblings. Seasons’ albums have been
reviewed in Music Maker’s Magazine, The Examiner, Faith and Family,
Christianity Today, and others. In addition the siblings have
composed original music for multiple theatrical productions and
documentaries.
Just as their parents had no idea
what they were getting into by naming their kids after seasons of
the year, Seasons is remaining open to where God leads them, and is
so grateful for how far he has brought them already as a family and
as a band. They are dedicated to writing and performing music that
will delight, inspire, and rejuvenate others, whatever season of
their lives they are in.
